TheatreAdvisor is sort of like Yelp for live stage shows:
The site could use a bit more visual polish, but the layout is quite functional. When you first hit the site, you see recent reviews, and if you’re just browsing, it’s easy to narrow things down to a specific area or theater. There’s a list of shows so you can see what’s playing, and a list of theaters so you can see where it’s at. You can even see a list of this week’s top grossing shows.
However, the real killer app is the Show Finder: click “Get Advice” and you’ll be walked through a sort of 20 questions quiz (powered by Hunch) that will narrow down your options and help you find a show you’ll really like. I think this is the secret sauce of Theater Advisor, and I’d really like to see them highlight it more.
With so many options for browsing their data, you’d think the site would feel complicated, but it really doesn’t — it’s an interesting site to click around and explore.
Right now, they’re only doing Broadway and off-Broadway shows, but presumably, they’ll expand accordingly if they take off. It looks like an underserved market to me; the question is whether they’ll end up targeting clueless potential theater-goers such as myself or regulars who really know what they’re talking about. Follow them at @theatreadvisor to find out.
